lobster boat residence
The Lobster Boat House is a compact, cozy, vertical home inspired by the simplicity and durability of its namesake. Built on the foundation of a former lakeside cottage, the house fits snugly into its tight urban lot while opening up to the water and natural light. Organized across four levels, the home includes a guest suite and laundry in the daylight basement, bedrooms at ground level that open to a private garden, and open living, dining, and kitchen spaces on the mid-level that take in views of Seattle’s Portage Bay. At the top, a flexible media room and office open onto a roof deck, creating a quiet retreat above the city.
A central stair and a custom steel bookcase run the height of the house, filtering sunlight from the south and creating a layer of privacy between the interior and the street. The design makes the most of every inch of space, with thoughtful flow between levels and a strong connection to the outdoors—including direct access to boating on Portage Bay.
Inside and out, the materials reflect the home's practical, economical, and honest approach. The front is wrapped in natural cedar siding, while the back uses durable fiber cement board. Interior finishes are warm but rugged—reclaimed Douglas fir beams and stair parts, translucent acrylic panels, walnut floors, and blackened steel details give the home character without excess. Every surface was designed to work hard, look good, and stand the test of time—making this small home a big example of thoughtful, sustainable urban living.
