test kitchen

Designed for a cookbook author and her family, Test Kitchen transforms the heart of their stately Capitol Hill home into a lively hub for cooking, gathering, and a little backyard magic. The kitchen and dining room now open right out to the new deck and patio—perfect for impromptu dinner parties or al fresco breakfasts.

Inside, oak floors have been bleached for a fresh, airy feel, while rich walnut and midnight blue cabinets bring drama and depth. Natural brass accents—on everything from the hardware to the custom sink with its built-in drainboard—gleam with the well-earned patina of daily life. Black soapstone countertops, left un-oiled, invite the marks of cooking adventures to become part of the kitchen’s story. Thoughtful custom touches abound: built-in cooling racks, deep pot drawers, a brass rail for favorite tools, and even writable cabinet surfaces for mid-recipe notes.

Generous arched openings nod to the home’s historic charm, while new French doors connect indoor warmth to outdoor fun. The result is a space that feels both elevated and down-to-earth—a place for testing recipes, feeding the people you love, and making memories as delicious as the food.
